Silhouette - Classically Modern!

Hi Roberts Crafters! I'm Vanessa from Our Thrifty Ideas. I'm so happy to be sharing a fun craft again with you guys!

Lately I have been completely obsessed with the look of silhouettes. They are so classic, yet sleek and modern at the same time.

I realized it was about time to add some fun personality to our rental home, and what better way than with a fun silhouette wall?

Today I am going to show you a really simple and inexpensive way to make a canvas silhouette for yourself!

What you'll need:
blank canvas - any size
picture of your loved one's silhouette
scissors
pen
freezer paper
iron
towel
paint
paint brush

This may seem like a lot of supplies, but you should have most at home!

To make your canvas silhouette

Take a picture of your loved one's silhouette. This is best if you can take it with a solid and contrasting background. Then print the picture off in the size that you want.
(My canvas is an 11x14, so I printed my picture as an 8x10)

Get a piece of freezer paper that is a comparable size to your canvas. If you need to, trace the canvas onto the paper and trim down to size.

Next, center your silhouette picture on the back of the freezer paper and trace the silhouette onto the paper. Be careful and get all the details

Cut out the silhouette, being careful to get all the details.

Then you will need to iron the freezer paper to your canvas. To do this, place the freezer paper in the appropriate place on the canvas. Cover with a thin towel and iron. The towel will keep from burning the paper as well as possibly spreading the ink from the paper to the canvas.

Once the freezer paper is ironed on, you can paint your silhouette. Make sure to brush from the edges inward in case you have any spots that did not get fully ironed down. This will help you to get crisp edges and keep the details. Mine only took 1 coat of paint!

Do not let the paint dry completely before removing the freezer paper. This will prevent the paper from pulling up any attached paint.

Let your silhouette dry and you are ready to display!

Make sure to check out Our Thrifty Ideas for other silhouette ideas that I am using for my unique wall!

Freebie Friday!

Congratulations!!! I sent you an email, reply back to it with your info and we'll get your prize sent out to you.

I just posted another giveaway that will be featured on Studio 5 with Brett Lund, be sure to check it out! Good luck everyone! -Brie

I don't know about you all, but I am SOOO ready for summer!! Today is my kid's last day of school, and it's got me dreaming about all kinds of summer adventures! Trips, picnics, hikes up the mountains, chillin' by the lake, perusing all the amazing farmer's markets . . . . the possibilities are seriously endless when it comes to summer. It's what makes summer my most favorite season! :)

So when it came to perusing my stash of fun things for giveaways I came across the Berrylicious collection from Imaginisce. This line perfectly captures the colors of summer! So many fun papers, stickers, stamps and embellishments!

So it's included in today's giveaway.

Then I came across a fun pack of Tombow markers that would coordinate beautifully with the Berrylicious things.

So it's included as well!

Then I found the Pets Stack & Mat Stack from DCWV. When I think of childhood memories, I think back to playing with my dogs outside. Or chasing them through the neighborhood when they got loose . . . Either way, we were outside playing. ;)

So the stacks are in the giveaway too!!

So I found these fun things, and thought it'd be fun to add an 8x8 linen album from We R Memory Keepers. You're gonna need something to hold all the fun memories you're going to scrap this summer, right?

You guessed it. In to the giveaway it went!

The heart punch is just fun.

In it went.

Now if you're going to travel, you'll want to take all your favorite supplies with you, right? Good thing I have the Crop In Style tote in the giveaway as well!!

Now who's ready for the best summer of their lives?!!! ME!!!

Envelope Mini Bags

Today on Studio 5, I used the Berrylicious Line from Imaginisce to make party favors and decor for your summer party. One of the things that I made was mini-favor bags from envelopes.

Make sure you sign up to be entered into our drawing for a Preserves Cricut Cartridge as well as some Berrylicious supplies from Imaginisce

For the envelope sample, I used a simple A2 envelope (4 3/8” x 5 ¾”). These instructions can be performed on any size envelope that you have.

1. Seal the flap of the envelope. I use a dry adhesive such as the tombow adhesive. You can use a glue stick. Just give the glue time to dry if you use a wet adhesive.
2. To make the sides and the bottom of the gift bag you will need to take the envelope and make it so the right and the left side of the envelope is longer than the top and the bottom of the envelope.
3. Score both the left side and the right side of the envelope at 1” from the edge.
4. Score 1” from the bottom of the envelope.
5. If you are going to stamp on your envelope, you want to do that next. Remember that if you don’t get to the exact edge that’s ok, because the top edge will be cut off, and the right and left edge will be folded in and you really won’t see the image anyway.
6. Take a bone folder and fold the flaps into the card and score them extra well making nice crisp folded edges. This will make it much easier for you to fold the flaps in if the edges are nice and scored.
7. Next you are going to cut off the top edge of the envelope (it will be one of the shorter sides).
8. Take you envelope, and place your hand inside the envelope, (this will open it up) You will push the sides down.
9. Next you will flip the envelope so you see the bottom, and you will push the bottom in. As you push the bottom of the envelope in, you will start to make two triangle flaps on the bottom. Take one flap, score the edges making a nice crisp triangle, and then repeat it with the other side.
10. Once both triangles are nice and folded, you will use double stick tape to stick them to the bottom of the bag. Stick your hand inside the bag and press on the bottom of the bag sticking the triangle flaps to the bottom of the bag.
11. Take your fingers and slide them on the inside of the side flap, this will push them in and make your bag close. Repeat this with the other side.
12. Take the top of your bag, and fold it down.
13. If you want to glue your bag closed apply adhesive to the inside of the flap keeping it glued down.

Buttons, Burlap & Home Décor!

My name is Jennie Larsen and I am the craft Blogger behind CraftOManiac. I love to create, craft, and then share it with all of you. I am so thrilled to be on Roberts Craft Blog today, I think Roberts Crafts is my home away from home, and I have bought and made tons of crafts from good ol' Roberts Crafts.

As summer is approaching, I have a fun Summer Home Decor Craft for all of you today. Just any 3 picture holder frame will do. Burlap, buttons and a glue gun is all you need.
HERE is my Burlap and Buttons I heart America Frame.

This Craft is pretty self explanatory.
YOU WILL NEED:
Hot glue gun
burlap
frame
buttons
PATIENCE!
Use the back of your frame as a guide to cut out your burlap. Hot glue burlap down let dry. I mapped out my "I" then "heart" and the "flag" first with all the buttons. Then one by one, burn by BAD burn, I glued them on. My cold diet coke in a can helped sooth the bad burn. Good Luck guys. ;)

Freebie . . . Monday?

Yup! Since Blogger had it's epic meltdown on Friday, I am posting the Freebie Friday on Monday. :D

My daughter's 8th birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks, and I've been stressing about what to do for a party. GAH! This will be her first birthday that we've done a "friend party", so I wanted to make it awesome for her. Problem is, she kept changing her mind on me! She went from wanting to do a fiesta, complete with a pinata, to wanting to do a pool party and I can't even remember what else she threw out there. LOL! She's totally my daughter, I can never decide between that many kinds of awesome myself. (You should have seen me one day at a lunch meeting at Chili's when the waitress rattled off the "Build Your Own Burger" options. I completely shut down and ordered the pasta. hahaha!)

So I came across this post on The Crafting Chicks blog http://thecraftingchicks.com/2011/05/cinderella-party-a-party-fit-for-a-princess.html. As much as I wanted to do a princess party (I haven't outgrown the princess phase, even if my daughter has) she fell in LOVE with the Puppy Party idea (link to the puppy party is in the princess party post). Seriously, it was like she was seeing a banana split for the first time. (It was the first dessert that came to mind.)

Now when I was looking through my stash of giveaways, I came across this set from Imaginisce:

This has been one of my most favorite collections from Imaginisce! I love the bright, bold colors and the fun circus fonts! Seeing this set already has me thinking about my son's birthday this October. How FUN would a carnival theme be for a 6th birthday party? I may have to get the Crafting Chicks on this for me. ;) It may take some talking though, right now he's got his heart set on the Puppy Party too. LOL!

So for today, Roberts is giving away the whole Animal Crackers collection from Imaginisce to one of you lucky readers!

Guest Blogger - Amber Packer

Happy International Scrapbooking Day! What an honor to celebrate today with you on the Roberts blog!

My name is Amber Packer. I am the lead designer for My Mind's Eye. I have been scrapbooking for 10 years. Like many of you, I began to really enjoy scrapbooking when my oldest son was born. How appropriate that International Scrapbooking Day falls on Mother's Day weekend.

I thought I would create a layout to share with you that focuses on my love for my two beautiful sons. I am looking forward to watching them grow and progress in the years to come. I will love them forever.

I wanted a "homey" feel to this layout, so I chose to use the Stella & Rose - Gertie collection. This collection has wonderful colors and classic patterns.

I thought you might like to recreate this layout while YOU celebrate the Mother (s) in your life and this wonderful hobby we share. These easy instructions will help.

Supplies:
1 - My Mind's Eye -Gertie "Little One' Darling Dots paper (12" x 12")
2 - My Mind's Eye - Gertie "Girly" Diamonds paper (7 3/4" x 9 1/2", 7 1/2" x 9 1/4"
and 4 1/4" x 6 1/4")

1 - My Mind's Eye - Gertie "Friends Forever" Petals paper (3" x 12")
1 - My Mind's Eye - Gertie "Delightful" Sweet Stripe paper (2 1/4" x 3 1/4")

Also used: one 4 x 6 photo (or 2 - 3 1/2" x 5" photos), brown pen, brown ink, adhesive runners, glue dots, glimmer mist and rhinestone swirl.

Step 1: Lightly spray glimmer mist concentrated on right side of page.
Step 2: Cut papers to sizes listed above.
Step 3: Layer papers as shown starting with tapestry paper on left side of layout.
Step 4: Outline layers with brown pen to add definition.
Step 5: Add blue rick rack trim to dot paper as shown.
Step 6: Add matted photo(s) over rick rack about 1 3/4" in from right side of layout.

Step 8: Add brooch trinket with button in center to left side of labels.
Step 9: Layer "Forever" title and chipboard.

How to Make an Arts and Crafts Gift Basket

A gift basket is always a great gift idea. It is a suitable present for any occasion; in fact, it can be given even when there is no occasion. The best thing about a gift basket is that it allows the giver to present a customized or personalized gift to the recipient. There are ready-made baskets available, but making a gift basket from scratch is more fun and fulfilling. This is because the giver gets to include items that would truly mean something to the receiver.

Take an arts and crafts enthusiast, for instance. If there is a special occasion (or if you just want to say thank you), you can give a gift basket to the arts and crafts enthusiast in your life. You can give a wine gift basket or fruit gift basket, and either of which will be appreciated. However, if you make an arts-and-crafts themed gift basket, the recipient will be overjoyed and the gesture will be remembered for a long time. Nothing makes more impact than a gift basket made with the person's interest at heart. The Roberts Crafts website has a lot of great stuff you can use to make a gift basket.

Before you make your own arts and crafts gift basket, think about the particular kind of arts and crafts the receiver is involved in. It can be paper crafting, needle arts, knitting and crocheting, sewing and quilting, beading or painting. Make sure you know the specifics before you buy things to include in the basket.

If the individual is into scrap-booking, you can include textured or glitter cardstock, stickers, a cutting tool or two, markers and the like. If the recipient loves cross stitching, you should include stitching fibers, an evenweave fabric, as well as a stitch frame. If the receiver is someone who loves to knit or crochet, the gift basket should include yarncrochet threadneedles and hooks. Meanwhile, people who are fond of sewing or quilting would definitely appreciate having needles or pins, scissors, thread, ribbon, lace and trim, and embellishments in their gift basket.

Aside from including arts-and-crafts related materials as gift basket contents, why not use these materials to prepare the gift basket itself? You can turn a plain gift basket into a festive container with the use of craft ribbon. You may attach the ribbon on the base or tie it along the handle. You can also add embellishments to make the gift basket shine and sparkle. Be creative and make your gift basket extra special!

Photo Board

Today on Studio 5 I made a photo board using supplies found in the art section, fabric section, and the awesome Upcycle line from Cosmo Cricket.

We'll post the video once it airs.

Here are the supplies that I used.
Upcycle collection All paper, and buttons are from Cosmo Cricket
Glubers from Cosmo Cricket

12" x 16" Canvas Board
Pink ribbon
Stapler Gun
Assorted Material
Clothes Pins

Directions:

1. Cover the canvas with the piece of material. Make sure you stretch the sides of the material as you staple it to the back of the canvas.

2. Staple all 4 sides of the material onto the canvas.

3. Measure all the sides and find equal points. This is where you are going to staple your ribbon.

4. I found that if I started in one corner and diagonally went to the over corner and then stapled, it was easier to figure out where the other ribbon went.

5. Staple all the ribbon onto the canvas. Remember to alternate the ribbon over and under each other.

6. For the flowers, take ribbon, or paper and wrap around the gluber, pleating as you go along. This creates the look of the pleated flower.

7.  Add bling, buttons, and paper circles to the center of your flowers.

8. Stick the flowers onto your canvas.

9. For the clothes pins, take patterned paper and glue it to the clothes pins.

10. Attach buttons to the top of the clothes pins.

11.  Add bling to the top of the clothes pins.

Photography Tips

Hello again, crafting friends! Leslie Smith of Urban Xpressions back for some more photo pointers to help with capturing all your summertime adventures.

In this blog post I want to explain some of the basic and commonly used functions found on most point and shoot cameras. Cameras are a quickly evolving technology, and a point and shoot camera can shoot much like an SLR camera if you know what functions to use in which situations. I’ll go over a few of these in this post.

Night Shot (AKA the little stars or other night scene in your shooting menu)
This is one of the more complicated settings on your point and shoot. Not that you have to be a camera aficionado to use it, you just have to understand it’s way of thinking.

In your night shot mode the camera is going to slow down your shutter speed to allow more light to be recorded on your camera’s sensor. This is why it is often suggested you use a tripod or stand of some kind in this mode. Slower shutter speeds catch movement, even the slight movement of breathing from the photographer, thus if you want a sharp night shot find a steady place for you camera.
Another thing night shot does is brings up what is called your ISO. The higher your ISO the noisier your photo will be, and by noise I’m talking about all the red and green dots that end up in your photo. This is the camera using all it’s facilities to compensate for the lack of light you’re shooting in. You can always use a flash to help bring more light into your photos, just remember: A flash stops at the first thing it hits, and is usually only good for a few feet of extra light.

Kids and Pets
Most moms and dads know trying to get your kids to hold still for anything that isn’t sugary and delicious can be a trial, and I think many camera manufacturers have realized this too. The kids and pets function speeds up your shutter speed to help your camera keep up with the rambunctious children, even if you can’t. This setting is ideally used outdoors, for a soccer or baseball game, or when any kind of movement is needing to be “stopped” on camera. I’ve also seen this setting aptly named as “sports mode”.
Once again a flash is handy when trying to help stop action, but tread carefully because as I alluded to before, flash alters the look of your photo.

Indoors
Despite our greatest desires to be outdoors in the sun all summer, some of our fun activities happen indoors too. This gives us a chance to use our indoor setting. This setting is sort of like night shot, in that it slows down your shutter speed, but more often than not includes your flash to help stop action and movement on the camera’s sensor. The camera may also have a built in color balance that will help make up for the color of light that indoor lights often create (typically yellow or green). This is another one of those settings where having your subject hold still is ideal, but the flash helps the camera record the stillness of the object much better than if there were no flash.

Remember it always helps to keep your camera manuals handy in case you want to learn to do something new and different. Try using something besides the “auto” setting on your camera, you never know what fun things you can achieve by taking over what the camera does. Keep shooting and experimenting!

6750

I have a song from a Nickelodeon Jr. cartoon running through my head, "We did it, we did it . . . something something something." hahaha Ok, that's all I can remember from it. You'd think after watching it a MILLION times with the kids, I'd have the lyrics down.

But we totally DID it! Well, YOU LADIES DID IT!! We got to our next goal of 6,750 fans on facebook. (Which makes me think of that song from Rent . . . but I'm changing the lyrics in my head. "Six thousand seven hundred fifty fans on the facebook, Six thousand seven hundred fifty amazing friends!"  . . . . . It works in my head. LOL)

Wow. . . It's going to be one of THOSE kinds of random days for me, I can tell. hahaha!

AHEM. Anyway.

HERE is your bonus giveaway post. Comment on this post to enter to win a $50 gift card!!! (If you're on online shopper, no worries. You'll get a coupon code for $50 towards an online purchase. YAY!)

Now I need your help. My goal was to get to 7,000 fans before Brooke, our marketing coordinator comes back from maternity leave. She comes back in a couple weeks!! GAH! We're SO CLOSE! Seriously, help me make my goal and I'll make sure the 7,000 giveaway is FANTASTIC. ;) It'll be fantastic anyway, no worries. I'll just make it EXTRA fantastic. I'll get a picture of it posted soon.
